Richard J. Cappel (Lt. Colonel, USAF Ret.) began his journey on January 24, 1934, as the third child in Port Arthur, Texas. His educational path led him through St. Mary Parochial School and Holy Cross High School in New Orleans before he graduated from Texas A&M University in 1956. On December 26, 1959, he married Mary Shelton of London, England, marking the beginning of a beautiful partnership.

His career in the US Air Force commenced in October 1956, spanning 28 years of dedicated service as an Air Force pilot. Richard's military expertise included flying various aircraft, from fighters like the F84F and F100 to bombers like the B47, and reconnaissance planes like the RF4C and RC-135. During the Vietnam War, he flew the RF4C, completing 192 combat missions over North Vietnam and Laos, earning esteemed accolades, including 13 Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Richard's commitment to service extended beyond his military career. He was a proud member of Knights of Columbus #16730, the Daedalians, and the San Antonio A&M Club.

On April 8, 2020, Richard bid farewell to this world, joining his beloved wife, Mary Evelyn Cappel, who had passed away just three days earlier on April 5, 2020. Mary, born on December 1, 1937, in London, England, shared Richard's journey as an Air Force wife and devoted homemaker, raising their five children: Richard Jr., Bruce, Philip, Susan, and Julie.

Mary's passions included tennis, gardening, and crocheting. Both Richard and Mary were devoted members of Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Parish.

Richard and Mary left behind a legacy cherished by their surviving family members: Sons Richard J. Cappel, Jr., Bruce D. Cappel, and Philip E. Cappel, along with their spouses and daughters Susan H. Thwing, and Julie A. O'Coners, along with their families.

In the memories of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Richard and Mary's enduring love and commitment to family continue to inspire.
