Following his military tenure, Joseph established himself as a roofing contractor in New Braunfels, Texas, where he honed his skills and built a reputation for hard work and reliability. Seeking new opportunities, he later ventured to Nebraska, joining his brothers Herbert and Benjamin in a business endeavor.

In Nebraska, Joseph immersed himself in a new venture, dedicating his efforts to a partnership with his brothers. Their collaboration led them to Burlington, Kansas, where Joseph played an integral role in the operations of his brother Arthur's restaurant, "Across the Broader." For approximately fifteen years, Joseph served as Arthur's right-hand man, contributing to the restaurant's success through his craftsmanship, culinary skills, and unwavering work ethic.

Throughout his life, Joseph cherished his relationships, finding deep joy in his roles as husband and father. He was married to Joyce Kent and Brenda Karen Zastra, with whom he shared the blessings of parenthood. Together, they nurtured a large and loving family, blessed with ten children, thirty-two grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Joseph's journey was marked by both triumph and loss. He experienced the pain of bidding farewell to loved ones, including his parents, grandparents, siblings, and other cherished family members. Their memories remained etched in his heart, a testament to the profound impact they had on his life.
